Electricity consumption reaches record levels, over 500 Megawatts imported per hour
Electricity consumption has significantly increased in recent days, peaking on the night between Wednesday and Thursday when it broke records by reaching nearly 1,500 MW. This extraordinary consumption level for Kosovo is primarily due to widespread electric heating.
Despite domestic production operating at almost full capacity, an additional 500 megawatts per hour still need to be imported at peak times to fully cover demand.
Unprecedented consumption has led the company to import approximately €21.5 million worth of electricity in just the first 20 days of February. Meanwhile, between December, January, and the current part of February, electricity imports have amounted to nearly €110 million.
Under these circumstances, maximizing energy savings should be a top priority for everyone, considering the high prices in international markets and the costs that must be covered. Using alternative heating methods, where possible, greatly helps reduce the need for imports and, consequently, lowers costs.
KEDS and KESCO have made every effort to maintain this essential service at the highest level, and given the extraordinary challenges faced, we have succeeded.
However, electricity remains one of the country's most vital sectors and should be a national priority, as it is directly linked to economic development and overall well-being. Careful management, conservation, and efficient use of electricity ease the burden on the entire sector and ultimately reduce costs for end consumers.
