What is causing high electricity consumption?
While natural gas is used as the main source of energy for heating in homes and residential buildings in many European countries, this is not the case with Kosovo.
Heating is the largest consumer of electricity and its use is increasing the demand for electricity in astronomical demands.
According to the analysis of the company's professionals, the situation is alarming as the peak of consumption is reached at 18:00, every day, and is not falling until midnight.
Only in October there was an increase of 18%, compared to October last year, while in early November, consumption increased by a record of 21%.
This massive increase in consumption, with falling temperatures, is bringing the need for more electricity imports from abroad, where it is known that electricity prices are five times higher than last year.
So, the more it is imported at these high prices from abroad, the more there is a risk for raising the price of electricity.
This large increase in consumption during the winter season occurs due to a number of factors.
One of them is the lack of alternatives and other sources of heating in our country.
At the moment, only in two cities of Kosovo, in Prishtina (City Heating – C.H Termokos) and Gjakova (C.H Gjakova JSC), there are thermal energy systems, so they do not use electricity for heating.
Since these systems do not supply the entire city, many consumers heat by combining fuels with electricity, while the greatest consumption comes from those consumers who heat only with electricity.
Another factor which has influenced the increase of electricity consumption as well as the great demand is the rapid construction of multi-storey buildings, which are all being heated by electricity.
Whether it is electric central heating, or mobile electric heaters, all these are affecting the overload of the electricity network as well as the massive increase of consumption during the winter season.
In recent months, KESCO, through awareness campaigns, has appealed to consumers to save electricity as much as they can.
If all of us try to save electricity, this will influence in reduction of consumption and ease the loads on the electro energy system.
All consumers have the weapon of maximum saving of electricity on their hands, and KESCO appeals to use it.
