Consumption is rising significantly, imports remain high
Kosovo is facing a challenging situation in the electricity sector, as demand for consumption is reaching record levels almost daily. This noticeable and ongoing increase—around 43% higher compared to the same period last year—is occurring at a time when domestic production capacities remain limited and low.
Currently, while the consumption is reaching over 700MW, domestic supply consists of approximately 315 MW from coal-fired power plants and around 130 MW from renewable energy sources (RES), which is significantly lower than the daily energy needs. As a result, a considerable portion of consumption is being covered through imports from international markets, at a time when prices are high and volatile.
This situation is creating additional challenges for the energy system, directly affecting the rising costs of its operation and management.
In this context, we call on all citizens to exercise care and awareness in the use of electricity and to actively contribute to its saving. Every kilowatt saved helps maintain system stability and makes it easier to cope with this challenging period.
We recommend that the use of high-energy-consuming appliances—especially during peak hours—be done with added caution and only when absolutely necessary.
We are in a situation that requires joint and coordinated action from everyone, for the common good and to minimize the impact in the future.
